New Tennis Courts Approved for Community Tennis Club

on Tuesday, 04 December 2018.

Here at Atlas Planning Group we manage a range of projects, residential, commercial, retail and recreational. This week we are delighted to have achieved planning permission for two new tennis courts and associated flood lighting at a well-known and loved tennis club in the heart of Salisbury!

The Brief

The club approached, with the hope of expanding their offering, to meet the demands of the ever-growing list of members. To ensure that the venture was worthwhile, the club required two courts which should be flood lit to ensure they could be used throughout the day in winter months as well as summer.

What were the challenges?

The proposed site for the new courts would bring the club closer to existing residential properties adjacent to it and we immediately realised that potential for negative impacts on them in terms of noise from players and intrusion from the flood lighting was going to be an important consideration.

On top of this, the site was located on an otherwise undeveloped parcel of land within the Conservation Area and potentially visible from Old Sarum Castle – a Scheduled Ancient Monument.

How did you do it?

It’s a vital part of our role to identify how to best resolve potential issues and bring in help from experts in certain fields. As such, we instructed Designs for Lighting, a specialist lighting designer to assess the impact of the proposed flood lighting and adjust the design as necessary to ensure neighbours would not be detrimentally affected.

Our vast in-house knowledge of heritage assets allowed us to assess any potential impact the development may have on the Conservation Area or long distance views and successfully argue that this would be extremely limited - vastly outweighed by the public benefits of the new facilities.

Reviews of relevant Case Law and recent Appeal Decisions further allowed us to demonstrate that generally, noise resulting from tennis courts was likely to be fairly low level and would not be detrimental to nearby residents.

The Result

Planning Permission was granted for the two courts with full flood lighting, meaning that the club can now continue with their much-needed expansion, benefiting the wider community!
